Comparison between DeWalt DWS709 vs DWS779

Accuracy

Both of these models feature an exclusive and innovative back fence design and an adjustable stainless steel miter detent plate with a precise miter system that can cut up to 2×14-inch lumber at 90 degrees and 45 degrees with 2×10, delivering quick and accurate cuts.

As opposed to the knob lock of its counterpart, the DWS779 offers a Cam-lock handle and a side handle to improve accuracy and adjustment ability even more. Not only that, it could cut 2×12-inch lumber at 45 degrees, something its counterpart can’t.

In this first round of DeWalt DWS779 vs DWS709, I will say DWS779 is the winner. Not only does the Cam-miter lock handle improve accuracy and adjustment ability, but it is safer for its users as well.

Design and Material

At first glance, the designs of these two are almost identical.

They both share several similarities, as mentioned above, and more. For example, a big aluminum base, tall sliding fences, a mighty 12-inch metal saw, and dual horizontal steel rails that feature linear ball bearings with an innovative clamping mechanism.

But there are some distinct differences between the two as well.

The most obvious difference that makes DWS779 stand out is the side handles. This 56-pound machine features two side handles for easy transport and safety measures too.

And its dimensions are not as large as the other one (21 x 17 x 17 inches), which will help it fit easier for storage.

But, I have to admit that the DWS709 is even easier to transport, owing to its lightweight design of 51 pounds, despite its rather bulky dimension of 30.75 x 22.75 x 19.5 inches.

Even though their materials are the same, it is undeniable that both miter saws have exclusive advantages compared with the other designs. However, the DWS779 wins this round fair and square. The handles it possesses are a plus for a big miter saw like itself.

Voltage and Capacity

You might be surprised to find out that both of them have a 15 Amp, 3800 RPM motor, powered by corded electricity. This powerful motor will deliver extended power, increase durability, and provide its users with a wide selection of applications.

You would be even more surprised to know that the DWS779 has a smaller voltage of 110 volts, as opposed to that of its opponent – 120 volts.

This feature will help its users save energy while using the product. It contributes to the enhanced safety for users as well.

About the capacity, its tall sliding fences are way more forceful than DWS709, supporting 7-1/2 inches of crown nested and 6-3/4 inches base molding.

Although DWS709’s tall sliding fences can not handle more moldings like the other, its strength comes from its over-sized and easy-to-read bevel angle scale, stretching up to 60 degrees to the right and 50 degrees to the left, while the other can only bevel from 0-48 degrees left and right.

For this round, DWS779 is the clear winner. It can handle more moldings and use less voltage during operation.

The Saw

Both competitors share a 12-inch slide miter saw, that when combined with the powerful motor mentioned above, will create a powerful miter saw as a whole. On top of it is a big yellow handle in both models to ensure firm grips during operation.

But DWS709 has the upper hand here with its stainless steel miter detent plate with 13 positive stops, adjusting its black saw to the most common miter angles, while its counterpart only has 10 for its silver saw. This feature ensures its cutting accuracy too.

DWS709 has won the title in this round. The 13 miter detents will provide its users much more angles to operate.

Additional Features

While its counterpart does not provide any additional features, DWS779 has a super-efficient dust collection system that captures over 75 percent of the dust generated. You can even add a LED light (sold separately) to the saw, which its counterpart does not support.

This round is a one-sided battle for DWS779. Thus, it is the clear winner.

Included Components

This round is a tie between the two since both models come with a miter saw, a carbide blade, a blade wrench, a dust bag, a vertical material clamp, and a user guide. There is not much to argue here.
